The first atom chip in Russia — a device for cooling, trapping, and controlling neutral atoms — was created at the Institute of Spectroscopy, Russian Academy of Sciences. Atom chips are a platform for creating quantum sensors based on ultracold atoms. Atom chip technology underlies experiments with atoms in the state of Bose—Einstein condensation currently being conducted aboard the International Space Station. Progress in this area will allow creating atomic clocks, gravimeters, and inertial sensors that can be used in both fundamental and applied problems.
