How conducting polymers were created is discussed and their properties are reviewed. Special charge transport features of phthalidecontaining polymers — the injection mechanism, high conductivity, and the dependence on boundary conditions — are described. Conditions for a polymer film to change to highly conducting and superconducting states are examined. Prospects for the use of wideband polymer materials in electronic device applications are discussed.
