Lomonosov Moscow State University, Department of Physics, Leninskie Gory 1 build. 2, Moscow, 119991, Russian Federation

A biography of George Green (1793-1841), the celebrated English mathematician and physicist, is presented, together with an analysis of all his published works. Green introduced new concepts and principles in his studies, which not only stimulated the progress of physics in the XIXth century, but re-emerged in the middle of the XXth century and have been found very effective in expressing recent advances in physics.
