Leonid Petrovich was a passionate man. He loved life, he loved physics, he loved his families and friends.

In physics he never followed fashion. He probed issues for himself, in his own way, and often saw more deeply than the rest of us. In the 1960s, when others thought of density fluctuations in the early universe as three dimensional, he showed that generic perturbations will produce the flattened (pancake) structures that were subsequently observed by astronomers. In the 1970s, when others were convinced that conformal invariance prevents particle creation from occurring in the early, rapid expansion of the Universe, he recognized that the gravitational wave equation is not conformally invariant, so primordial gravitons should have been created in profusion. In the 1980s, when others regarded this graviton creation as a parametric amplification of vacuum fluctuations, he realized it is due to extreme squeezing of the gravitons' quantum state. In the 2000s, when those of us working on LIGO gravitational wave detectors thought we were analyzing their behavior perfectly, he showed us we were not: the response of LIGO to a gravitational wave is somewhat different than we thought, and we had to modify our data analysis accordingly. Time and again Leonid Petrovich challenged the Physics Establishment; and more often that not, he was right.

Leonid Petrovich was my dear friend. I loved him. And I miss him, very much.

Ну, что сказать тебе, мой старый друг,
Которого уж между нами нету —
Иная жизнь кипит теперь вокруг,
А наша, как твоя, течёт всё в ту же Лету…

Ты был азартным и поднялся выше нас
В науке, в спорте, в жизни зарубежной.
Но к нам ты возвращался каждый раз,
Как бумеранг дорогой неизбежной.

Ты с нами спорил и бросал упрёк
В пассивности и в ожиданье «чуда»
И каждый раз преподносил урок
Из жизни собственной — такой ты был «зануда»…

Границы разделяли нас и мили.
И быта рознь «играла» против нас.
Но дружбу нашу мы не позабыли
И ты об этом знал даже в последний час.

Ты выбрал сам свой путь и свою долю:
Любил науку больше чем семью.
И вырвавшись уже давно на волю
Не мог и не хотел вернуться на стезю.

Ты прожил жизнь такую, как задумал.
Ты сам её творил, играя роль Творца.
И только об одном ты не подумал,
Как мало времени осталось до конца.

Смеялся и шутил, в футбол играл с Азимом,
В диагноз не поверил, сгоряча.
И медиков с усмешкой отодвинув,
Рукам ты дочерей доверился, шепча

Их имена и имена любимых,
Покуда ещё мог их вспомнить не в бреду…
А мы- его друзья с бессилием судимых
Остались горевать на «этом берегу».
