The article examines the scientific and applied research of Academician V.A. Kotelnikov in the pre-war and war periods (1932—1946) on the development and creation of encrypted telephone communication systems, on the creation of cryptographically resistant equipment based on research on the discretization of speech signals, on the creation of a theory of potential noise-immunity for channels with noise.
