Kapitza and Dirac have predicted the diffraction of an electron on a standing optical wave. The light and matter exchange their roles here with respect to the classical physics. The idea of matter diffraction on an electromagnetic wave has been further developed in atomic physics. Diffraction of atoms has been observed in different scenarios and is being used in atom interferometry.
