A detailed review of the state of direct study of galactic cosmic rays using spacecraft and high-altitude balloons is presented. The most urgent fundamental problems of high and ultrahigh energy astrophysics solved by direct methods of cosmic ray observation are discussed. Possible prospects for the continuation of research in this field of science in the next decade are outlined.
