This article provides a brief overview of the main global trends in applied research aimed at developing a next-generation optical time and frequency standard based on the anomalous low-lying isomeric state of the 229Th nucleus. The results of pioneering research are presented, focusing on the development of an original method for resonant excitation of 229Th nuclei by ultraviolet radiation emitted during the decay of exciton states in xenon and krypton cryocrystals.
