Infrared and microwave spectroscopy of ozone: historical aspects

The history of the development of infrared and microwave (vibrational-rotational) spectroscopy of ozone from the mid-19th century to the present is described. The development of both linear and nonlinear spectroscopy is discussed; to the extent that it is necessary, the neighbouring fields of the physics and chemistry of ozone (monitoring in the atmosphere, laser stimulation of chemical reactions, study of relaxation processes, etc.) are also touched on. The current status of vibrational- rotational spectroscopy of ozone is assessed overall and the prospects for its future development discussed. A considerable body of reference information is provided.
