The condition for a minimum of the bulk energy of a metal is used to determine the chemical potential of the conduction electrons. This potential is measured from the value of the energy far from the metal and is equal (with the opposite sign) to its work function. Suggestions are made as to the reasons why a very simplistic description of the problem leads to results that do not conflict with the experimental data.
