Phase singularities and optical vortices in photonics

Second half of the 20th century has come with ideas of developing methods allowing formation of optical vortices (OV) characterized by circular motion of an energy flow in an electromagnetic wave around so-called phase singularity points. Such optical beams exhibit rather unique spiral-shape wave front, providing the beam with an orbital angular momentum (OAM), that can be transferred to a matter and cause rotation of nano- and micro-objects. Nowadays, OV beams are actively used to solve both applied and fundamental problems in optics and photonics. In this review, we sequentially survey the main steps, as well as technical advantages and lacks related to the development of OV beam generation techniques starting from appearance of random phase singularities in scattred fields towards the latest developments in vortex microlasers allowing generation of OAM-based fields at nano- and micro-scales.
