The physics of severe plastic deformation

The review is devoted to the description of a number of important studies of recent years in the field of the fundamentals of the physics of severe plastic deformation (SPD) of metals and alloys and their further systematization. Based on the analysis of experimental data and theoretical approaches, three fundamental principles have been formulated and seven characteristic features inherent in MTD processes have been noted for the first time. The regularities of SPD are entirely based on the postulates of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. A solid state under deformation is regarded as a mechanical dissipative system in which the total energy continuously decreases or dissipates, passing into other, non-mechanical forms of energy. Within the framework of the proposed nonequilibrium evolutionary thermodynamics (NET), it is possible to describe from a unified standpoint the evolution of the structure of defects for polycrystalline and amorphous metallic materials upon SPD. It is noted that the process of mechanical alloying of powders should not be completely identified with the SPD processes.
