Nonequilibrium phase transformations in alloys subjected to severe plastic deformation

A review of existing experimental results and theoretical concepts of unusual phase transformations in severely plastic deformed (SPD) alloys is given. The achievable phase and structural state of these materials results in a unique combination of physic and chemical properties is attractive for technological applications. The driving forces and possible mechanisms of the realization of anomalous phase transformations depending on the intensity of SPD, and alloy composition and temperature are discussed. Based on results of systematic analysis, we distinguish two main, qualitatively different scenarios of development phase transformations under SPD condition, namely (i) the direct "mixing" of atoms in slip bands and (ii) due to the accelerated diffusion on defects in locally changed thermodynamic conditions and a "freezing" of the reached non-equilibrium state. The diagram of non-equilibrium stationary states attained in the alloy under SPD in dependence on the temperature and / or intensity of SPD has been proposed. The proposed approach provides to predict the attained structural state of the alloys and compounds for given thermodynamic parameters and kinetic condition of the system.
