Mysteries of diamond synthesis at the Institute of High Pressure Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR

Institute for High Pressure Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, Troitsk, Moscow, Russian Federation

Based on archival materials, the history of diamond synthesis at the Institute of High Pressure Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (IHPD) is described. Many details of this history are still unclear. In particular, it is not known who was the scientist of the IHPF, who saw in his laboratory the first synthetic diamond in the USSR. It is also not entirely clear why the high-pressure group at the Institute of Crystallography of the AS USSR, extremely close to success, was ruthlessly destroyed. The history described gives a certain idea of the organization of science in the USSR, which is often idealized at the present time.
