Planetary atmosphere research: modern methods and their applications to climate change studies in Russia

† , , , ,
Space Research Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, Profsoyuznaya str. 84/32, Moscow, 117997, Russian Federation

Global climate change represents one of the major challenges to the sustainable development of the Russian Federation. Comparative climatology of the terrestrial planets provides a unique framework for understanding the stability limits of Earth's climate system and for validating predictive climate models. For more than two decades, the atmospheres of Mars and Venus have been successfully investigated using spectroscopic instrument suites (SPICAM, SPICAV, and ACS) developed at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS). This paper discusses analogies among the climate systems of the terrestrial planets, extending the comparison to the broader context of terrestrial exoplanets. Particular attention is given to technology transfer: instrumentation and observational techniques originally developed for planetary exploration have been adapted for high-precision monitoring of climate-active gases (CO2 and CH4) in Earth's atmosphere. Preliminary results obtained with the Ozonometer-TM experiment aboard the Ionosfera-M satellite constellation (2025) and the current status of the Driada instrument being prepared for deployment on the International Space Station are presented. It is shown that planetary research is evolving from a field of fundamental science into a source of strategically important technologies directly supporting the priorities of Russia's scientific and technological development.
