Charge exchange injection into accelerators and storage rings

Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, prosp. akad. Lavrenteva 11, Novosibirsk, 630090, Russian Federation

Development of charge exchange injection at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, mastering of charge exchange injection at research centers worldwide, and the experimental observation, explanation, and damping of electron-proton instability (electron cloud effect) are reviewed. Techniques for preparing a circulating proton beam whose intensity is an order of magnitude higher than the space-charge limit are considered. The problems of stripping-foil stability in the process of injection of intense beams and laser ionization of accelerated atoms are discussed.
