Low emittance electron storage ringsa Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, prosp. akad. Lavrenteva 11, Novosibirsk, 630090, Russian Federation b Novosibirsk State Technical University, pr. K. Marksa 20, Novosibirsk, 630092, Russian Federation Low emittance electron (positron) beams are essential for synchrotron light sources, linear collider damping rings and circular Crab Waist colliders. In this review, principles and methods of emittance minimization are discussed, prospects for developing relativistic electron storage rings with small beam phase volume are assessed, and problems related to emittance minimization are examined together with their possible solutions. The special features and engineering implementation aspects of various facilities are briefly reviewed.
