The review is based on a mere half-an-hour seminar talk (at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics — ITEP) and is accordingly brief and superficial. The introductory historical section is mostly devoted to the fundamental work done in, but not always known outside, Russia (USSR). Foundational works and astronomical observations instrumental in shaping the field are discussed, as are such aspects as inflation, baryosynthesis, dark matter and dark energy, vacuum energy, large-scale gravity modification and microwave background angular fluctuations. The presentation of the material is admittedly not entirely objective but rather is given from the Russian (ITEP) perspective and is influenced by the author’s personal views and biases.
