Precision laser spectroscopy in fundamental studiesa Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (National Research University), Institutskii per. 9, Dolgoprudny, Moscow Region, 141701, Russian Federation b Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, Leninsky prosp. 53, Moscow, 119991, Russian Federation The role of precision spectroscopic measurements in the development of fundamental theories is discussed, with particular emphasis on the hydrogen atom, the simplest stable atomic system amenable to the accurate calculation of energy levels from quantum electrodynamics. Research areas that greatly benefitted from the participation of the Lebedev Physical Institute are reviewed, including the violation of fundamental symmetries, the stability of the fine structure constant α, and the sensitive tests of quantum electrodynamics.
