Magnetospheres of planets with an intrinsic magnetic field

Lomonosov Moscow State University, Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics, Leninskie Gory 1 build. 2, Moscow, 119991, Russian Federation

The review presents modern views on the physics of magnetospheres of Solar System planets having an intrinsic magnetic field, and on the structure of magnetospheric magnetic fields. Magnetic fields are generated in the interiors of Mercury, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune via the dynamo mechanism. These fields are so strong that they serve as obstacles for the plasma stream of the solar wind. A magnetosphere surrounding a planet forms as the result of interaction between the solar wind and the planetary magnetic field. The dynamics of magnetospheres are primarily enforced by solar wind variations. Each magnetosphere is unique. The review considers common and individual sources of magnetic fields and the properties of planetary magnetospheres.
