’Prout’s law’ and the discovery of argon

This paper was written on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Prize for physics and chemistry in 1904.

The discovery of the first noble gas, argon, is described — an achievement which was awarded with a double Nobel Prize in 1904.
