This lecture was read by Petr Petrovich Lazarev, founder and first editor- in-chief of Uspekhi Fizicheskikh Nauk, at the solemn meeting of the Academy of Sciences which was held in Moscow on 13 September 1925 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The lecture was first published as a booklet in only 500 copies by the Academy’s publishing house in Leningrad (1926). The portraits of scientists in this paper were made by P P Lazarev.
