Black holes and quantum processes in themTheoretical Physics Institute, Department of Physics, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada Recent advances in the physics of black holes are discussed. The analogy between the laws of black-hole physics and thermodynamics revealed by the study of the interaction of black holes with one another and surrounding matter is discussed. Quantum pair creation in the gravitational field of black holes is considered. Some cosmological consequences of the evaporation of small primordial black holes and the possibilities of observing such events are considered.
